剧情简介
Constantly o n the hunt and sufferin g from hallucinations that drive his violent nature, an unn amed man is ca pturing women and savagely beating them to death . Meanwhile, a woman is luring men into a violent end, by way of her knife. Dr iven by the same force to make the opposite sex suffer, the killers’ fates intertwine. The two must face off in a battle to the death, in which they are force d to reveal the horrible truth behind their addiction to murder. “Brutal” t akes an interesting approach to its visuals, drawing heavy influence from Western “Grindhouse” films, u sing a filter to make t h e footage appear grainy, damaged, an d with light and color fluctuations. Unfortunately, the visual styling e nds up feeling misguided, as other than applying the filter it does not imitate any other aspects of the “Grindh ouse” genre. Despite trying to dirty up the film, it is apparent it was shot on digital . The cinema tography is also a step above most “Grindhouse” productions, with Takashi Hirose p roving h e ha s talent be hind the camera. E xterior shots to those taki ng pl ace in small spaces are all competently framed, lit, a nd transition well. The decision to add an effect on top of the work hur ts the film’s imagery and even gives a sense of desper ation to try to capture a certain typ e of nostalgia w ith the audience, instead of relying on its o wn strengths. It is unfortunate whe n one creative choice can hurt a production so much. T he story of “Brutal” is simple but effective, it does at tempt some sort of social c ommentary about t he viole nt nature of men and women, but it d oes not offer enough depth into the subject to justify the amount of violence on display. T he film does end on a strong note wit h an interesting twist, with a re veal that is bound to gross some out, while giving others a chuckle. In spite of its simple nature, those who enjoy film s that make them somewhat uncomfort able and enjoy the challe nge of getting throu gh some ultra-violence, “Brutal” poses a fun and entertaining challenge in that regard.
