Thus Planned Obsoles cence was born. Shor tly af ter, the fi rst world wide cart el w a s set up e xpressl y to reduce the life span of the incandescent ligh t bulb, a symbol for innovation and bright new ideas, and the first official victim of Pla nned Obsolescence. During the 1950 s , with the birth of the consu mer society, the concept took on a whole new me aning, as e xplained by flamboyant designer B rooks Stevens: 'Pl anned Obsolescence, the desire to own something a little newer, a little bet ter, a little sooner than is necessary...'. The growth society flourished, every b ody h ad everything, the waste was piling up ( prefera bly far away in illegal dumps in the Third World) - until consumers star ted re belling...
