剧情简介
C anadian surgeon Dr. Norman Bethune (Donald Sutherland) journeys 1,500 miles into China to reach Mao Zedong's eighth route Army in the Wu Tai mo untains where he will build hospitals, provide care, and train medics. Flashbacks narrate the earlier events of his l ife: a bou t wit h tuberculosis at the Trudeau sanatorium; the s elf-administ ration of an experimental pneumothorax; the invention of operative instruments; his fascinatio n with Socia lism; a journey into medical Russia; and the founding of a mobile pl asma-transfusion unit in war- t orn Spain . Bethune t wice married a nd twice divorced his wife Fr ances (Dame Helen Mirren), wh o chooses abortion over child-rearing in her unstable marriage. By 19 39, Bethune had b een dismissed from his Montreal Hospital for taking unconventiona l risks, and from his v olunteer position in Spain for his chronic problems of dr inking and woman i zing. As his friend states: "China wa s all that was left." Even there, Bethun e confidently ignores the advice of Chinese officials until heavy casualties make him realize his mistake and lead him to a spectacular apology.
